Default Adobe Reader and Vista problems

Ok so I need to download Adobe Reader 8.0 on my laptop and is m using Windows Vista. Ive tried downloading from many different places, I went through the adobe site, through the google download manager, and from a CD that came with my laptop. the problem is it starts to, what seems like, download with a special adobe window, but once its done with that it just stops, the window disappears and nothing happens. I cant figure out whats wrong. Im thinking it has something to do with vista since my parents both have Windows XP on there computers and they have downloaded adobe with no problems. Its very annoying and if anyone has any idea of what to do then please help me.
