Phishing works because it's related to masses. When you send thousands of email at a time, you have a chance that 0.0001% of those users will follow your instructions. Anyway this used to work better when all started. Now scammers must think to new solutions to fool others

--- On that site was a cute animated video of a bear. Evidently that tickled a number of the users who reloaded the page several times to see that animated bear. In fact, some of the participants said that the animation was proof that the site was legit, since it would take too much effort to copy it! ---

why it works?
simple people are too gullible, and too concerned with making money, or making sure they aren't doing something wrong they dont take the time to check out the site, the url, or anything like that to make sure its safe and that they are not being scammed its so easy to tell who's scamming you if you ever find an email or site that looks suspicious asking for money or account details, always email the actual owner or help desk of that site and ask about the email that you recieved

well, the other thing you can do if you are an affiliate of any product or service is to email them back and sell them something.

Microsoft actually has a phishing filter. I do not have it installed so I don't know how it works. But here it is.
