Well, the way it was explained to me is.. imagine a tracker is a traffic cop. Now you want certain files - movies, games, whatever. You go to the traffic cop and ask for directions to the files (search). The traffic cop (tracker) gives you a map to the files - the torrent. You use your client to read the map (torrent) and get the files. So without the tracker no one can get the map to the files that are being shared. Editing trackers, adding trackers - that depends on what client you are using. The more trackers you use the broader audience you have to share your files with. (Broader audience = more possible seeders). Speeding up your download is dependent on a few things - first your connection. Second how many seeders there are. Third your share ratio.
