You seem to be on the right lines.....

The torrent you load into your client to download will start to seed as well as download. But 9 times out 10, it will download a lot faster than it uploads. This means that it is only polite to leave the torrent in the client seeding until have have uploaded at least the same as you download (This is called your Ratio) and to seed you have to be online just like when you download.

People have varying opinions on a good ratio, but you should always try to maintain a ratio greater than 1, anything higher than 1 means you have given back what you have taken...
