Hey, torrentgrabber1
Well.....
There are so many factors that can affect playback on standalone DVD player. Even the model of the player. Speaking of which: are you sure that your player can play Xvid? You will have much better chance with DivX. Try reencoding the file.
Another approach is to convert the file either to DVD or VCD format. There is 99% chance that your player will recognize the movie. (Don't expect, of course that you'll get DVD quality.)
What kind of error message your DVD player gives you? Something like "NO DISK"?
Sometimes (rare situation) when you record on low quality disk and using maximum recording speed - the disk can become unreadable on other DVD drives ot DVD players.
But I think your problem is with encoding.
Since I don't know how familiar you are with the process - my suggestion will be - your BEST shot will be NERO. Also there is small and neat program called Color7. You can get shareware and then find crack for it. I use it sometimes for simple conversions.
Well, that's it in a few words. Don't forget to set your recording speed to a very minimum!
